Eco Flag

We are the proud holders of an Eco flag.  Our Eco Council members are a committed bunch of key stage 2 children.  They work hard to be elected by their class mates to be a part of our vital team of councillors who help us all to follow our school Eco code.  The children meet regularly both during and after school.  They work together with Miss Fletcher and Mrs Hart and have the job of planning assemblies and events to help our school to be ECO COOL. 

To date, they have been responsible for; helping us to become a waste free school (all non-compostable and non-recyclable waste goes home), encouraging us to make smarter and healthier choices with our break time snacks and of course they help us to keep our school grounds clean and tidy; all of which has resulted in us obtaining our Eco school green flag award.

Shared Education Project

In January 2017 St. Bernard’s Primary School & Preschool Unit, Knockbreda Primary School & Knockbreda Nursery School were delighted to receive funding for Shared Education for a three-year period. This has now been extended to allow us to continue our work together.

Our schools have a strong relationship that extends back well over many years. Through the shared education project the schools have engaged in a range of projects that have impacted our pupils, parents and even grandparents during this time. We have enjoyed many events together whilst incorporating areas of the curriculum. 

 Shared Education funding has allowed us to bring our friendship and ability to cooperate to a new level of excellence.  Our ‘Outdoor Literacy Project’ has developed and evolved over the past number of years and with the three key strands being:

– Talking and listening

– Reading

– Writing

Children in Primary one and Nursery were firstly involved in the project which has now developed through to Primary two and five. Staff from each of the schools have undertaken various training altogether covering each of the areas. 

We have also used our programme to connect with the community as much as possible through training and events throughout the year. 

The Department of Education are committed to a process of encouraging schools across Northern Ireland to partner together.  In particularly, they want schools that traditionally serve the protestant or catholic community to come together.

The Department of Education states the purpose of shared education is:

• Deliver educational benefits to children and young persons;
• Promote the efficient and effective use of resources;
• Promote equality of opportunity;
• Promote good relations: and
• Promote respect for identity, diversity and community cohesion.
